Rabbit Heart: An excerpt

This is just a small sample of what I'm writing. It's not good, I'm not a writer but the only way I'll get good at something is by doing it. So, I'm writing and it's not good but I think it's a good idea. A story that I would read, a story I could tell so I'm writing it and I don't care if I never share it all because at least I'll know I've written it.

Rabbit Heart is the story of a young girl who is seperated from her class when the world ends. There are monsters, there are grown ups and there are people trying to kill her. And then there are the student protesters who were on their way home when it all went to hell and they take her under their wing and protect her and look after her and they call her Rabbit. And amongst it all is Rabbit's sister Alice and her best mate looking for her, making the journey to the city and trying to get her back because adults can go to hell but family look out for each other. And they never, ever leave them behind.

The casting/character list is here and I've got a few playlists lying around with some random drabble scenes included. I don't know why this is in my head but I just like writing it.

Rabbit stumbled, tumbled towards the exit sign. Skidding across glossy floors she reached out, falling as she heard the low pitious groans behind her. Scrambling to her feet she ran, relief washing through her as her fingers pressed against the cold silver bar and- stuck.

"No," she said pushing against the door. Turning she saw the faint shadows creeping across the floor as they got closer, their inhuman noises rattling through the empty corridors of the museum. Panicked she pressed against the door again, throwing her whole weight against it as she tried so hard not to scream- not to make any noise. "Come on, come on please open!"

She thudded into the door again and again. She didn't understand, she didn't understand why it wouldn't open.

She saw it, a glimpse of it in the corner of her eye. The bloodied and torn uniform, the lank hair, the grey-green clammy skin; it was inhuman. It was her friend, it had been her friend and now it was coming for her. Staring at the monster Rabbit wimpered pressing against the door and looking for an escape. And that was when she saw it- the bolt. Bending down Rabbit pulled it out quickly with a satisfying clink and jumped reaching for the top one and pulling it down. She managed to wiggle it down a little as Laura, her friend had been called Laura, came for her. Jumping again she grabbed it screaming now in exertion as she pulled it all the way down.

Pressing against the bar Rabbit stumbled outside as the alarms began to wail in warning. Now, there was more than Laura stumbling down the corridor determined to get her.

"I'm sorry Laura, I'm so sorry." Rabbit whispered before she shut the exit door firmly behind her. Wiping her face stubbornly Rabbit pressed her back against the door as she stared at the empty grey back alley in front of her. She could hear them behind her, the door seperating her from then and just like that, quick as a rabbit, she was gone. Running down the alleyway as quick as she could. She just had to find her, she just had to find Alice.

---

"Alice!" A male voice, young and teasing, yelled startling the sleeping girl. Jerking awake Alice looked around wildly, grabbing the tree branch and holding it out before she finally settled her gaze on the boy. The boy who was smiling at her guiltily. Alice scowled dropping the branch and picking up an apple to throw at his head. "Oi, what was that for?"

"For waking me up like that you dolt," Alice replied scowling at Will as he rubbed his head. Stretching, Alice pulled herself up until she was sat upright against the base of the tree. Watching as Will bent down for the apple and began to eat it, she shook her head and reached for her bag. "You'll get sick if you eat that and I'm not going to hold your hair back whilst you vomit Will Carter."

"How do you know it'll make me sick? You don't know everything you know, you just think you do." Will replied around a mouthful of apple as he watched her pull out the map.

"I know enough to know if an apple has a hole in it, it usually has a worm in it or worse. It could be a maggot," Alice said smiling as Will pulled a face and spat out the apple as quickly as he'd stuck it in his mouth. Alice turned her attention to the map, running her fingers across a bright purple line Alice traced their path.

"How far off are we?" Will asked guiltily as he shuffled through the grass and sat down beside Alice. Tugging the blanket loose, Alice stretched it across them both as she pointed to the map and where she reckoned they were.

"I think- I think this is where we are and this line is where we should have been." Alice said.

"I'm sorry Al, I thought it said right, I was sure it was right." Will began before Alice put her fingers on his lips.

"Don't apologise, it wasn't your fault alright?"

"Yeah but Li-"

"She'll be fine. She is fine, I know she is. She has to be and we're going to find her. We're just four days out alright? And that's it but look-" Alice pointed to a short cut on the map even though she knew Will would hate it "-if we cut across this town we could make it up."

"A town? Alice, no. It's too dangerous. We can't go through a town."

"We have to okay, we just- she's alone somewhere. She's just a kid and she's alone. We have to find her before something else does."

You never need any excuse for writing things. And I haven't much concentration right now, but what you have here seems good to me. I'd say keep going! :-)

Thank you so much. It is something that is stupidly staying in here for once.
